Aggressive and Passive People

The contention was that aggressive people were overbearing and were not worried about being abrasive. Assertiveness was a more benevolent style in dealing with people to get needs and wants satisfied.

Passive, in the common vernacular refers to docile, perhaps compliant behavior. In poker, `assertive' is not even a term. Passive is a term that really means not aggressive. It is referring to the choice of `action'. Aggressive means inclined to bet or raise.

Passive means inclined to check or call. In life away from the poker table, there are people who are aggressive, assertive or passive. The question is, "Does this translate to their behavior while playing poker, and if so, how?"

There are aggressive drivers, assertive business people, and passive spouses. Does the hard charging attorney necessarily fling chips like confetti? Some people control the betting action readily, while others just wait and see what happens.

It is actually outside of many people's comfort zone to be the center of betting attention without a very strong hand. Other people have no trouble representing great strength on a bluff or a whim. How do we identify the people who are likely to attack as being different from those likely to parry?

A person who approaches the table with confidence in an assertive manner is more likely to play in an (not overly) aggressive manner based upon what they know. A timid person who seems ill at ease when they approach a group of strangers to play a game is more likely to play passively, regardless of what they know.
