Aspect of an Opponents Personality
The other aspect of an opponents' personality that heavily influences his behavior at the poker table is the level of Sensing versus that of Intuition. Keirsey says that these two terms really mean, "Introspective" and "Observant". Observant people notice more of what their five senses input to their brains.
Introspective people tend to spend more time making an abstract connection as to what they observe might mean g . The two types (Intuitive vs. Sensing) are not mutually exclusive (nor are any of the personality types) and both traits have value on the green felt.
The sensing person can be quite adept at noticing details, the `trees'. The intuitive person may miss individual details, but may discern extraordinary parts of the `forest'. The introspective person might not knowingly be aware of these mannerisms, but might have a very clear understanding as to whether your hand was weak or strong, or might glean exactly what your hand was without knowing how he came to that conclusion.
This is a challenging aspect of evaluating an opponent. Personally, I feel as if the best poker players have highly developed skills in both areas.
The prowess to combine these two abilities may have to do with other aspects of their personality (a slightly paranoid personality tends to make someone quite attentive), but much has to do with a rare pairing behind the keen observations of details and the ability to draw conclusions in a non-linear, intuitive manner.
