Becoming an Information Gatherer
Not only must you keep your eyes open, you must also listen closely to any stories, or anecdotes that a person relates. They are often sharing something about themselves. If they express anything close to an opinion, it should tell you something of their background.
What is their level of education? What kind of job do they have? What skills does their job require? How much of an outlet is poker? At a minimum, you should be able to notice differences like those that exist between these two people:
Male
Early 40's Taciturn Facial acne scars
Nice, stylish head of hair Rolex, worn face inward Expensive glasses Casual, understated shirt; not pressed
Sits slightly slouched at the table
Resists eye contact with anyone -
Female
Late 30's Attractive face Cheerfully talkative Slightly outdated hairstyle Shorts and Halter, bright colors They fit before she gained weight
Modest wedding ring, yellow (cheap) diamond
Open body language
If you do not naturally have the knack to pick up these details, you will have to practice to gain skill in this area. Like anything else, at first it is a conscious effort to notice the little things. Make an overt effort to notice minutiae, most of which will not amount to much.
