Gunners and Nuclear Physicists

Artillery gunners and nuclear physicists do not make up the majority of your opponents. Professions will run the gamut of ilmost anything you can imagine. Who is to say if a retired reacher is a quick thinker? Also, because someone thinks luickly does not mean that he will come to the right conclusion!

It is easy to observe if someone thinks quickly, just watch him play. You can evaluate his decisions just as you would anybody else's: were they correct? Now that you have seen them play, what is their job? Does their job reward quick thinking or is it irrelevant? If their profession reveres speedy thought, they will robably make good decisions in a game given the knowledge they have.

If their job is one where they must repeat similar tasks throughout their workday, you are probably looking at a plodder. They are not just wasting time when they think: they need to. These thoughtful players are at a disadvantage because every pause can reveal loads of information to an observant opponent.

I was playing in a tournament and was heads-up with Phil Hellmuth in a hand of Omaha Hi-Lo when he came out firing on the flop from the blind (which surprised me on that hand) and I paused. Once I did, I knew he would know what I held and my hand had to hit the muck.

Without getting into details, my hand would have been obvious to any decent Omaha player, which meant that I might just as well have turned my cards face-up against Phil. Had I acted quicker, I could have been more creative.

Once T gave him a moment's insight into my thinking, I was cooked. This happens to plodders all the time. They give their opponents insight into their thought processes.

Quick thinkers tend to go batty in jobs that are repetitive. The job of computer memory (RAM) testing involves taking the memory out of the production line, placing it on a testing device, pushing a button to initiate testing, looking at the readout for a green light and stacking it into another part of the line.
