Rule Variations

Some casinos offer surrender. If your initial hand seems hopeless you can take back half your bet and forfeit the rest. Surrender is usually restricted to situations when the dealer doesn't have a natural. This is known as late surrender. Occasionally, you may be allowed early surrender against an ace that turns out to be blackjack.

Other rule variations include different payouts on naturals, not checking the hole card on insurance bets, restrictions on splitting and doubling, and a panoply of side bets that usually offer worse odds than the basic game.

Every casino has its own unique combination of rules, so you should always check the specifics before playing. We'll talk more about the effects of rule variations later in the chapter.

A blackjack reality check

Okay, let's say you have a hard thirteen and the dealer's upcard is six. What should you do? Most people hit, and that's a mistake. What if you have a hard sixteen and the dealer's upcard is a seven? Most people stand. That's a mistake, too.
